MMO Roundup: Olympic medalists, Warhammer 40k, and more

Sometimes you’d like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? It’s not all WoW, all the time! Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all of the other MMOs around, past, present and future.

Working in EVE for $2 per hour

Nothing gets you famous as quickly on the internet as a well-made chart . This one shows the ships of EVE online, with a circle around them whose area represents the cost of the ship when it gets shot down from under you.

The Daily Grind: Would you buy a magazine dedicated to your MMO?

Filed under: World of Warcraft , EVE Online , Opinion , The Daily Grind Both EVE Online and World of Warcraft now offer a high quality official magazine to anyone interested.

MMOs of 2009

Taking a page out of Evizaer’s book, here is a quick run down of the MMOs that I played during this calendar year. The list is awfully long, however there are only a small handful of games that I paid money for – the rest simply failed to sell me during their free period

EVE Online: Dominion Expansion Now Up and Running – Loot Ninja

Loot Ninja EVE Online: Dominion Expansion Now Up and Running Loot Ninja Think of World of Warcraft except no wizards or night elf mohawks, but battle cruisers, star jumping, and intergalactic dominance. EVE Online launched their ..

Researching virtual economies to learn about real ones

Researchers are apparently using economies in virtual worlds like Everquest , EVE Online , and of course our own World of Warcraft to determine how real-world economies work, according to this article by Reuters . Scientists have, of course, used WoW to model real-world behavior before, but that was specifically for something biological, and thus there were quite a few differences between the virtual model and the real application. In economies, however, it’s all just money and numbers, so researchers can easily see real patterns and movements in the data

Squeezing more money out of your players

One of the complaints about Free2Play games is that developers would on purpose design the game mechanics in a way that makes buying stuff from the item shop more desirable. Like slowing down leveling and then selling you scrolls of faster leveling. That is indeed a possibility, but it isn’t limited to Free2Play games

Alts – On sale! Buy now!

Inktomi is considering taking CCP up on its offer to pay for a second EVE Online subscription at a reduced rate: I received an email from CCP, who are holding a “Power of Two” sale running until October 13th offering players with an existing EVE Online account the opportunity to have the second alternate (alt) account or “twink” as some would call it. I would pay $50 for 6 months of EVE for that second account, making that $8.33 for an EVE subscription that usually costs me $35 for two plexes

A challenge to Blizzard’s secretive philosophy

Blizzard is notorious for not announcing release dates or patch days until the very last minute — if at all. Sites like WoW.com and MMO-Champion have had to develop relationships with people in the know in order to have any idea when a patch is coming out, and even then we usually don’t find out for sure until about 12 hours before a patch makes it onto the live servers. Not all MMORPG companies are so secretive however.

Binding MMORPGs together

In a recent interview in Wired , Blizzard COO Paul Sams stated that their next MMO would be “significantly different” from WoW, so as to not canibalize WoW’s user base. Now I have this great idea what they could do: Blizzard could do a fantasy space-flight MMO with a twist, with every planet representing a World of Warcraft server

EBank needs EThugs

To the complete surprise of pretty much no one, EVE Online’s troubled player-run EBANK burst into flames again today.

Adding some action to EVE

In a move that seems to have caught everyone off guard , CCP announced some details about their upcoming new title, Dust 514, at GDC Europe. In a surprise GDC Europe announcement, CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson has debuted Dust 514, a strategic first-person console MMO that connects in to the existing EVE Online universe, allowing ground battles for planets to be fought by console teams

Does an MMO have to cost money to deliver fun?

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Sci-fi , City of Heroes , EVE Online , Perfect World , Opinion , Free-to-play , Runes of Magic The MMO industry is split between games where you pay and those that are free. Some are pay to play, with subscriptions and the cost of the game while others are free to play but you still have to buy a license key. Some are freemium where the game is free to buy and play but you enhance it with micro-transactions using cold, hard cash

Whether you have a Pre, an iPhone, a Google Android handset or one of the new, shiny Nokia phones, apps (short for applications) are usually an important part of how phones work

The Daily Grind: Mainstream advertising

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Sci-fi , EVE Online , Business models , MMO industry It seems like every website I visit these days, from MMO-centric wikis to the LA or New York Times has adverts on it. This is no big surprise as it’s the perfect way of making money on free content but what does surprise me is the number of adverts for MMOs like EVE and WoW . Coming across such adverts on gaming sites is understandable but I get a little shock whenever I see them on news sites or even on TV.

The Daily Grind: Browser-centric MMOs

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Sci-fi , EVE Online , Game mechanics , MMO industry , Browser , The Daily Grind , Legal The other day , I watched this demo of Gaikai , a new service being spearheaded by the legendary games developer David Perry . The idea is a simple one: using a browser you can access everything from MMOs to racing games and even the memory-hog that is Photoshop with all the actual software installed on a remote server and accessed via the cloud . Now it seems like an awesome undertaking but I came out of it feeling really impressed.
