How broadband is like healthcare

A reader sent me a link to a NY Times article on the US National Broadband Plan , suggesting that this might be a “possible topic from someone with a world view” . So I’m going to talk about that, and will explain how a national broadband plan is similar to healthcare in being a form of redistribution. My apologies if that’ll sometimes sound a bit like Gevlon, only that I of course would be for redistribution, and he would be against.

Burning Germany to the ground

As I’d hoped, Bill has posted a battle report for the game of Axis & Allies (revised edition) that we played on Saturday. I played the Allies, while he controlled the Axis powers

Upper Deck’s Hero of the Year

This rather strange announcement over on the Upper Deck page about the TCG (in which, by the way, they admit that all of those problems you contest winners have been having giving your codes to Landro are completely intentional — they’re joking, in case you’re wondering) is all about one of the cooler things they’re doing with the TCG tournament system, something called Hero of the Year . The world champs have already been chosen, but as I understand it, these are like points winners: they may not have won the championship, but they earn points for placing in each tournament, and at the end of the year the person with the most points gets named Hero of the Year, and wins all the prizes associated with that: a free year of Upper Deck product and play, years of GameFly and Netflix, and of course lots of loot cards and exclusive loot

Gearing up for WoW: The Razer Naga

Dragon Age and Mature Games

EA Bioware sent me some press material for their upcoming RPG Dragon Age: Origins . I loved the Baldur’s Gate games back in the day, and I am looking forward to seeing this new game as it is touted as a “spiritual successor” to Baldur’s Gate. Bioware also seems to be positioning this game as a “mature” game, heavy on the blood, violence and possibly sex.

We’re sexigaste in Sweden

In June I received an e-mail asking me if I would consider an interview for the WoW magazine of the Swedish magazine Level about my experience as officer in an all-girl guild. I thought, sure, why not, and had a ball with answering the questions about my guild. Then I moved in July, completely forgot about it, and only on Monday did I remember to follow up on this when I saw Ensidia’s Kungen ask around for a copy of the magazine with an Ensidia article in it.

Razer announces the Naga MMO mouse

BlizzCon isn’t the only big gaming convention happening this week (though you’d never known it from reading our site — we’re a bit obsessive, no?). Gamescom is going on in Germany, and gaming equipment manufacturer Razer has announced there that they’re releasing a new mouse , specifically designed for MMO games. They put it together in conjunction with MMO players (they say the folks at Curse had a hand in it), and while it isn’t officially tied to Blizzard as far as we can tell (Steelseries already has that market cornered ), there is one interesting connection.

Last two chances to win BlizzCon tickets

A pair of contests popped up on the World of Warcraft official site in the past few days, reminding everyone of a small and closing window to try and get to BlizzCon . One contest, sponsored by Alienware , requires absolutely nothing more than signing up for the DELL newsletter through their Back to School 2009 promo page. That’s it

Real-life WoW-style name tags

Now this is the sort of thing YouTube was made for. Aram Bartholl, a German artist “famous for his exploration of the relationship between the digital and physical world,” did a WoW -inspired project at the Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach, CA yesterday afternoon. It looks like it was a repetition of the project in the video above, which took place in Germany in 2008.

Tom Chilton talks about 3.2 and the future of World of Warcraft

Videogamer.com has a nice long interview with World of Warcraft Producer Tom Chilton about everything from patch 3.2 and the Argent Tournament to the future of the game at large. They caught up with him at the Warcraft Regional Finals 2009 tournament in Germany this past week, and in part one, he talks about the upcoming patch and what Blizzard is expecting to get out of it. He says the Isle of Conquest battleground is their most “epic-feeling” instanced PvP setting since Alterac Valley, and that they want it to feel nuts, with players fighting each other via air and land.
