MMO Roundup: Olympic medalists, Warhammer 40k, and more

Sometimes you’d like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? It’s not all WoW, all the time! Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all of the other MMOs around, past, present and future.

Turning single-player games into MMORPGs

One last question from the open Sunday thread, then I think I answered them all. Void asked: “I would like to see you post about what MMOs could learn from single player games.

Dear WoW,

Dear WoW, is a post from: Aurdon’s Mage Blog I’m not leaving you, but… I think we need to start seeing other people. In my reckless youth, I played  all the games

One Shots: Ground beef

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Screenshots , One Shots It’s always sad to see our friends in MMOs go away. With that said, it’s a little bit strange when your friend in an MMO is a cow . How does one moove on from the loss of such a bovine friend in World of Warcraft ?

One Shots: Late to the party

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Screenshots , One Shots Believe it or not, not every single MMO gamer on the face of the planet has actually played World of Warcraft . There are still those who are just now checking into the 800-pound gorilla, such as today’s One Shots contributor, Maldronnar ! He writes in to give us his thoughts: I think I was the last MMO fan on the planet to play World of Warcraft , but I picked the game up for $5 on Amazon over the holidays and recently started playing with some friends from my office

One Shots: The Purification of Quel’Delar

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Screenshots , One Shots When we recently said we didn’t get very many World of Warcraft screenshots, a few readers heard the call and decided to send in some truly lovely images to us. Today’s One Shots is one such screenshot that we received from Michelyne of the Caelestrasz (US Oceanic) server

One Shots: Are we there yet?

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Screenshots , One Shots While graphical glitches in World of Warcraft seem to be few and far between these days versus five years ago, we do still get the occasional report of weirdness going on in the game.

Over the edge

Spinks is excited about the Mirkwood expansion for LotRO, specifically the solo dungeons called skirmishes . She dreams of a MMORPG future in which people have soloable, scaling dungeons, with NPC henchmen fixing the obvious problems of class balance. You’d never have to rely on another player again to advance in the game! I think that would be an absolute nightmare, a step too far in progressing solofication of MMORPGs

Mirkwood vs. Cataclysm

Technically I am subscribed to both Lord of the Rings Online and World of Warcraft, only that the LotRO subscription is the “lifetime” deal.

Guest Post: – The WoW to LotRO Transition: A Look Back

A few months ago a friend and former WoW guildmate, LRNs, quit World of Warcraft and was kind enough to write a post for this site explaining his decision and the things that led his entire static group to go in search of a new game. In the end they settled on Lord of the Rings Online, and by all accounts they have been loving it. Here is LRNS’ three month retrospective on his switch from WoW to LotRO: Over the summer, the Order of the Serpent World of Warcraft (WoW) Guild transitioned to Lord of the Rings (LotRO, usually pronounced Low Tro ) and became the Heren Lokion Kinship

All the World’s a Stage: So you want to be a bad guy

Today, All the World’s a Stage begins a series on “how to be evil,” bringing back the bad guy in your fantasy roleplaying — complete with ideas, methods, warnings, and practical examples. Up to now, we’ve mostly talked about roleplaying as a way that you and your friends can get together and enjoy developing your characters’ relationships with one another.

One Shots: Drunken revelry

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Screenshots , Events, in-game , One Shots Sure enough, it’s that time of year. Brewfest has opened up in World of Warcraft , offering lots of drunken fun for those who opt to take part. Normally we don’t get pictures quite this fast, but Mittzi from the Moon Guard role-playing server was nice enough to send this one in just as the party was getting started.

Sony, Turbine, Jagex, Blizzard, and NCsoft named in patent infringement lawsuit

Filed under: World of Warcraft , EverQuest , Guild Wars , Lord of the Rings Online , Business models , News items , Runescape , Legal , Virtual worlds It seems to be a World of Lawsuits (TM) recently in our industry. Bloggers are being sued for libel, NCsoft is being sued for patent infringement, Linden Labs is being sued for trademark violations, Turbine is suing Atari , and now five companies are all being sued over a patent dispute.

One Shots: Somewhere, a skinner is twitching

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Screenshots , One Shots You can imagine – once people heard that Onyxia was being retooled so that players could take her out and land themselves a shiny new pet – the frenzy was on.

Check out this roundup of the latest news from the wider MMO world. PAX 2009: Massively interviews BioWare and LucasArts on SWTOR PAX 2009 played host to the first North American public demo for Star Wars: The Old Republic and by the cheering and applause of a packed theater at Sunday’s stage demo, we’d say it went exceedingly well.

The purpose of Achievements, and how it’s changed over time

Moonglade has a good post up about the pros and cons of achievements. Nowadays, achievements are everywhere, but when they were introduced to the game a while ago , they were seen as a great way for Blizzard to integrate an idea that had really taken off on Xbox Live (and that an impending competing MMO, Warhammer Online , was implementing for themselves ). They were mostly seen as a benefit for the solo player — even if you hit level 80 and nabbed some awesome gear, there’d be some optional fun for you to have in the future

The Daily Grind: Do you buy lifetime memberships?

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Sci-fi , Lord of the Rings Online , Business models , New titles , The Matrix Online , Tabula Rasa , Star Trek Online , The Daily Grind , Casual , Champions Online On Monday we told you Cryptic had announced a lifetime membership for Champions Online . For $199 you get access to the Star Trek Online closed beta, special costumes not available to anyone else and other juicy perks. Cool huh

One Shots: This is a no-fly zone

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Screenshots , One Shots Hey, if you’ve got to spend time hanging out in Dalaran in World of Warcraft , you might as well have fun with it, we think. Today’s One Shots comes to us from Pascalin of the Steamwheedle Cartel (EU) server, who decided to risk getting unceremoniously tossed off his mount by Dalaran security to snap today’s lovely shot. He writes in: Dalaran, city of a thousand magical splendors – and an annoying no-flying zone

The Daily Grind: Apps and MMOs

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Sci-fi , Age of Conan , EVE Online , Lord of the Rings Online , Culture , Economy , Game mechanics , The Daily Grind These days, without descending into total geek fan girl mode, phones are all about apps. Whether you have a Pre, an iPhone, a Google Android handset or one of the new, shiny Nokia phones, apps (short for applications) are usually an important part of how phones work
